Healthier Bagel with Cream Spread

For all of you bagel and cream cheese lovers out there we have good news!  You can enjoy a bagel with cream cheese spread for fewer calories and as part of a healthy breakfast (or snack).  The secret is to choose two specific products.

1.  A "bagel thin" rather than a traditional bagel.  Several companies produce bagel thins which come in a variety of options including whole grain.  Each bagel thin typically offers only 110 calories.   Although this swap will leave you with less of the sought after chewy bagel you will save at least 200 calories.  If you are really not able to leave behind your traditional New York style bagel try cutting the bagel into three pieces instead of cutting in half (though the body of the bagel) and remove the middle section.

2.  A lower calorie cream cheese spread.  My current favorite is Laughing Cow's Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese spread.  The product comes in a variety of flavors including plain and cinnamon cream (flavor used for this recipe).  Each wedge will only set you back 45 calories and in comparison to traditional cream cheese will allow you enjoy twice the amount.

Once you spread both halves of the bagel thin with the delicious lower calorie cream cheese spread add your favorite fruit and breakfast toppings!  Just make sure to limit those toppings to no greater than one tablespoon.

This healthier bagel recipe is perfect for a complete breakfast or served as a snack for all ages.  Children can get involved in the simple preparation process and customize the bagel to their desire.  Fun, fun, fun!

  • 1 bagel thin (ie. Arnolds)
  • 1 Laughing Cows Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese spread (ie. Cinnamon Cream)
  • Fruit of choice, sliced
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon topping of choice (ie. granola, dark chocolate chips)
1. Split bagel in half
2. Spread half of cream cheese wedge on each slice of bagel
3. Add fruit and additional toppings

  1. Oh, yum! I haven't eaten breakfast yet, and guess what I'm craving now!! I love Laughing Cow's Light cheeses, especially the Queso Fresco & Chipotle, but I've never seen the cream cheese at my local stores. I'm on the hunt now! Great tips to help people cut the massive calorie load of bagels while still enjoying the flavors they love!
